All luggage had been packed. We had been
trying to accomplish this insurmountable task for the past three days. After
all, we were going to Canada to see our daughter. Her mother painstakingly
collected small kitchenware items, cloths etc. in spite of my reservation. I was worried about the total weight allowed by the Airline.
Finally, the day had arrived for our
departure. I booked a cab. Around 7:30 we left for the Airport. The flight was scheduled to go past mid-night at 00:45 Hrs. We reached Airport within an hour.
All formalities did not take much of time against my expectations. And we still had three hours with us to spend at Airport.
We had with us home-made dinner. We also packed lunch and dinner for the next day as we were aware that the Airline would not
serve us the food of our choice. We had dinner and waited for the boarding. It was around
midnight when the boarding started. Now we had seated in plane where we were going to
spend next 15 hours.
The flight took off on time. At 1:00 AM we were air borne. We were tired and wanted to sleep but the Airline crew started serving food. It was around 2:30 AM when the passengers finished food and air crew collected garbage. The lights were then put off. Most of the
passenger were busy watching the screen in front of them. We tried to catch some sleep but
it evaded us. I started seeing the map. The plane had crossed Indian territory
and was flying over Lahor.
The night in India should have ended in next few
hours. But our night was to stretch for another 12 hours. For us, the day of 4th was to break after 24 hours. We kept flying in the dark over unknown
and unheard territories; over unknown oceans and over Greenland before the day
broke for us. A 24 Hrs night was never experienced before. This was our first
flight between two-time zones.
Half-slept and half-awoke, we landed at
Toronto Pearson International Airport - some 12000 kilometer away. Immigration was fast but the baggage collection took almost an hour. Our daughter and
son-in-law were waiting outside.
While travelling to home, I saw houses
with slanting roofs. These were artistically laid in a row. Almost all had four-side open architecture. In the back yard there seemed enough space for
gardening. Some houses were decorated with lights and Christmas tree.
Roads were deserted in this wee morning hours. Traffic lights were in blink mode. I was surprised to see the way drivers were invariably
exercising caution at cross road. Trees had shed their leaves. Outside temperature was 4 degrees Celsius. The sun had not yet come up.
After half an hour drive, we reached home.
